Step 3 – Capture response: Sample data_output on each read operation. Also sample full_flag and empty_flag on every clock cycle.


Step 4 – Check correctness: Compare each read data value against the expected value based on write order. Verify that full_flag asserts only when the FIFO reaches capacity and that empty_flag asserts only when no data remains.


Step 5 – Measure progress: Track functional coverage for scenarios: FIFO becoming full, FIFO becoming empty, simultaneous read and write, and reads from an empty FIFO (error condition).


Common Challenges in Testbench Implementation


Engineers frequently encounter several obstacles when implementing the five verification steps.


Stimulus generation complexity increases exponentially with DUT interface width and protocol sophistication. A 64-bit bus with burst transfers requires significantly more stimulus variation than an 8-bit single-beat interface.


Checking completeness is difficult to verify. Passing all tests does not guarantee the checking logic itself is correct. Self-checking testbenches can suffer from false positives or false negatives if reference models contain errors.


Coverage closure—reaching 100% of defined coverage goals—often consumes 50% or more of the total verification schedule. The final coverage points typically correspond to rare corner cases that are difficult to stimulate.
